One way to increase your AdSense revenue is to put them in your blog feed, so your readers subscribing to the feed will get advertisement banners and text provided by AdSense. It will increase the ads impression and will impact to the increase of your revenue. This article explains how to configure Feedburner feed for your web or blog, setup AdSense for feed, and setup a WordPress plugin to redirect all feed request to your blog to Feedburner feed that’s already setup.

Setup FeedBurner feed

First thing to do is to setup a feed address by FeedBurner. Log into http://feedburner.google.com and use your Google account.  FeedBurner is a feed republishing service which will read feed provided by your web or blog and then publish it to your readers. This way, you can get a statistic of your readers, traffic analysis, and advertisements.

After log into Feedburner account, you will see a page like this.

You need to enter your web or blog feed address on the bottom field and click Next button. If you do not know your feed address, try to look at your web or blog and find a link with a title “Feed” or this icon . If you use WordPress, then the feed address will likely be http://yourblog.com/feed , in this example we are going to use my personal blog’s feed located at http://akhdaniel.wordpress.com/feed.

Click Next button when you are done.

Next, you need to enter the title of your feed and specify the FeedBurner address for your new feed. This new address is the one that your readers will use for subscribing to your feed. But, different from your original WordPress feed it will be tracked for statistics, traffic analysis, and advertisements (if we have done the last step later).

Click on Next button.

Your FeedBurner feed address is now complete. Please note the address provided there, in this example http://feeds.feedburner.com/AkhmadDSembiringWeblog. We will use this address for the next steps and also this URL is the address that you should publish to your reader that are going to subscribe to your feed.

In this step we just click on “Skip directly to feed management” link. Later, we can add additional statistics features to this feed. You will be redirected to this confirmation page:

Click on “My Feed” link, and click the title of your new feed, then a page like this will appear.

You are done! Your FeedBurner is now ready for publishing. If you post a new article on your web or blog, FeedBurner will read it and republish it using the new FeedBurner address above.

Setup Google AdSense

Next thing to do is to setup an Adsense for feed. Log in to your Google AdSense account, and click on AdSense Setup tab then ”Get Ads” link. Click on “AdSense for Feeds” link.

Next, you need to configure a FeedBurner feed to be attached with AdSense for feed.

On the page that appears, specify the ad type, size, frequency, layout and color by selecting on the appropriate fields. You could optionally set the channel for later analytic purpose.

The most important part is to set the feed. Google AdSense automatically detects whether we have already set any FeedBurner feed before or not, and if you did, it will appear in the “Feed” selection like the above example, if it has not have an ad unit attached.

Just click the “Save” button and you are done!

Please wait for about 10 minutes, and then check your Feedburner feed address by entering the feed URL in browser. For example, http://feeds.feedburner.com/AkhmadDSembiringWeblog.

As you can see, now each feed entry will be attached with one AdSense advertisement. If your readers click the ads then you will get your AdSense revenue.

In addition, you are now able to provide your reader many kind on subscription channel like email, XML, My Yahoo, Google, My AOL, newsgator, netvibes, etc.

Setup WordPress Plugin

Last step it to redirect all traffic to your original feed address to your FeedBurner feed address. For example if your original feed address was http://akhdaniel.wordpress.com/feed. Then you need to redirect it to your Feedburner feed address like http://feeds.feedburner.com/AkhmadDSembiringWeblog.

This can be done in several ways: editing .htaccess file, editing some code in WordPress program, and installing a plugin. We will choose the easiest one: using the plugin. Here we use the FD Feedburner plugin by John Watson at http://flagrantdisregard.com/feedburner/.

After installing the plugin at the WordPress Administration page, go to the plugin setting page, which is quite simple.

You just need to enter your FeedBurner feed address and click Save button. That’s it.

Now, all traffics that directed to your original feed address will be redirected by the plugin to your FeedBurner feed address. This including all existing links to the original feed on the theme files, so you don’t need to do anything with the theme files nor the .htaccess file.

The feed content will be the same with the original since FeedBurner checks the original feed regularly, but this time it’s attached with AdSense advertisement and you can track your reader statistics, manage subscriptions, reporting for analytic purpose, and much more.

In this article we are going to discuss how to put Google AdSense Link Unit on a WordPress Theme header so that it mimics a top menu or sub menu of the theme. As you may already know, putting Google AdSense advertising on websites or blogs should be done in such way that the advertising box is perfectly “blended” in the page, so that the visitors would think that it was not an advertising.

In the case of Link Unit, it should be placed near the menus, whether it is main menu on the top of the page, left menu, or right menu. Some people also suggests that we place the Link Unit near a search box.

It’s assumed that you already have an account on Google Adsense (click here if you have not) and a blog on self hosted WordPress. The simple 2 steps technique described here can also be applied on any website or blog since we are going to modify (a little bit) the HTML code of the theme.

1. Create AdSense Link Unit

First step, you need to obtain the Adsense Link Unit code to be embedded to your theme. Log in to your Google AdSense account, and click on AdSense Setup tab then Get Ads link.

Select Link unit since we are about to create one. Click Continue button.

Next you choose the ad format.

1. Select the size of the ads and number of ads link in this unit
2. Select the color for the ads to match it to your theme color

Click Continue button.

Next, you optionally choose the Ad Channels. Channels are grouping for all ads for analysis purpose. For example you have several AdSense units in your site and you want to track which unit is generating revenue most. By defining channel you can track that information and then optimize the ads grouped on that channel. You can skip this step anyway. Click Continue button.

Next, you set the name for this ads. Type a name that identify the purpose or placement of this ads. Then finally, click the Submit and Get Code button to get the ads code.

There your ads code are. Copy the code, we are going to paste it to a theme that we need to place the link on.

2. Modify Theme

Now, login to you WordPress admin account. Click on the menu Appearance (on the left side of the page) – Editor. This will bring you to the current theme file editor.

The theme editor will show up:

Here we can modify many aspect of our current theme like colors, size, layout, etc. You can select other theme than the current theme by selecting the theme to edit list box on the top right of the page.

In this example we are going to modify the Header file which is a PHP file that defines the header section of the theme. Select Header (header.php) on the right side of the page. Then the file editor the the header.php file will show up.

The file was basically a plain PHP file with HTML codes inside. Let’s take a look at it:

The <head> section is the HTML header for the theme, skip that as it is. Take a look on the <div> tag with ID “header”. This is the div that contains the header layout. We are going to add our AdSense code inside it. Just before the closing tag of this div, put this code (the one that we got from AdSense setup, but surrounded by a new div tag with some style to match the whole theme colors):

Save the file by pressing the Update File button. To revise, your new header.php file will looks like this:

You are done!

Now, take a look on the new theme with an AdSense Link unit inserted just below the header which looks like a sub menu of our page (can you find it? :-) ).

In this article we are going to setup Google AdSense for Search in WordPress blog. It’s assumed that you already have a Google AdSense account which can be obtained easily from Google Adsense website.

Setup AdSense Ad Unit

Login to your AdSense account. Click on AdSense Setup tab. Find and click the AdSense for Search link, like the following:

Now you are on the first page of creating AdSense for Search.

On the first part of the page, select the Search Type whether you want users to search your site, a collection of sites, or the web.

Next, if you selected the Search Type to be Only sites I select, specify a site or list of sites to search across. These can be individual pages, parts of sites, or entire sites.

Next, optionally you can add additional keywords to fine tune the search engine’s results and ads to match your site’s content. Specify keywords that describe the content and subject of your site.

At the more options section specify the Site Language, Site Encoding, Country or Territory, Custom Channel for reporting purpose, and Safe Search which will exclude sites which contain explicit sexual content from the search results.

Click Continue button to go the the next process. The next page for creating AdSense for Search will appear like the following:

In this page, you specify the look and feel of the search form to be displayed on your site. You could also set the length for the search text box.

Click Continue to go to the next page.

In this page, we are going to use a page on our own site to display the search results. So, we specify the URL of our search results page which we are going to create later. Please note the URL, for example http://yoursite/search-results, which means that we are going to create a new page in WordPress and can be called by have that URL.

Next, specify the location on the advertising on the search result. In this example, we will place it on the Top and Bottom of the search results. This will depend on your theme layout.

Next, optionally, you can specify the colors for the search result page to match to your theme color scheme.

Click Continue to go to the next page.

In this page you must agree the term and agreements by clicking the checkbox. Now click the Submit and Get Code button to get the code for your site.

In that page, you are presented with two codes. That codes need to be placed on your site. The Search Box code is to be placed in a new widget that we will create later, and the Search Results Code is to be placed on a new search result page (remember the URL we defined in the previous step).

Create WordPress Widget

Now go to WordPress admin. We are going to place a Text widget to the side bar. Find it on the Available Widgets and drag it to the Sidebar 1 box.

Fill the Widget Title for example “Search”. Then copy and paste the Google AdSense Search Box Code to the widget content. Click Save and Close when you are done. The new widget will appear on the sidebar of you site.

Create WordPress Page for Search Result

Next, we need to create a new Page that will contains the search results provided by Google AdSense.

Fill in the Title page, for example Google Search Result. Paste Google AdSense Search Results Code on the body part of the page but this time you must select the HTML tab so that we can paste HTML and Javascript code to the page.

Please also check that the URL for the page is the same as the URL for the search result defined on the creating AdSense for Search step.

You may also adjust the width for the search result to match your template layout. This is done by editing the googleSearchFrameWidth variable.

When you are done, click Publish button.

Testing

Go to you WordPress site. Please check the there will be a new widget which contains the Google AdSense search form. Try to enter a keyword and press the Search button.

Then a search results page will appear that looks like it is a part of your web site.

Now you are ready to get revenue when someone click on the ad links provided by the search result.
