Funambol for BlackBerry-like capabilities on cheap handsets

The Funambol core project is a free and open source mobile synchronization server that provides push email, address book and calendar (PIM) data synchronization, and device management for wireless devices, leveraging standard protocols such as SyncML (as defined by Wikipedia). Using Funambol, we can have a BlackBerry-like features on cheap handsets which have at least J2ME and GPRS capabilities (well, almost all of them have this feature now).

Several mobile phones

We can use Funambol to synchronize our email, address book, and calendar data from many kind of mobile devices (Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Palm, iPod, iPhone, and any J2ME capable devices) and popular services on the web like Gmail, Facebook, MSN, and Yahoo, and even desktop applications like Ms Outlook, Thunderbird, and Lotus Notes.

It means that we can read, compose, and reply/forward emails from our mobile device with the same account as our GMail or Yahoo Mail. Using it’s push email technology, we can be notified by our cheap mobile phone when someone send us an email on our Gmail account. We can add a task or schedule a meeting on calendar using Outlook then we can see them on a cheap K320i Sony Ericsson mobile phone as well as on Gmail Task. Our contact address books will also be synchronized between all devices, services, and application that we use, meaning that our phone address book will be the same as our Yahoo, Outlook, or Gmail Contacts database. This is a very good solution for backing up valuable contact database especially for those who always lost his mobile phone easily (like me ;)).

Companies with large number of mobile employees and very tight schedule will take advantage by installing it’s own internal Funambol server, as the employees will be reminded always with it’s task and schedule as well as keep in contact with the headquarters using push email technologies. This can be achieved using the employees’ handsets that they already have.

How Your Business Can Accept Credit Card Payments

October 14th, 2009 1 comment

Opening a Merchant Account

The first step to be able to accept credit cards as payment is to apply for a merchant account. Banks and merchant account companies offer credit card payment systems for both small and large businesses. However, before you sign up for their service, make sure to research and check the exact terms and conditions of your chosen merchant account provider.

When comparing merchant account service providers don’t forget to check the pricing. How much would each card transaction cost? How much would the setup charge cost you? What kind of support does the company provide to their customers? What about the reputation and track record of the company? What do present clients have to say about their service? These are important questions to consider when choosing a merchant account company.

The Secret Formula for 1st Page Search Ranking

October 12th, 2009 1 comment

Among the most often asked questions that I ever get is "Why isn’t my site showing up in searches?" I’m going to give you a very simple formula.

KEYWORD COMPETITION. Choose a keyword you know you can rank for. (Hint: it’s probably not the first one you think of). Here’s how to know if you have a chance. Look at the top ten sites that rank for a given keyword and specifically for each site check the following indications to see if they are optimizing for that keyword. You can determine most of these by viewing the source code from your browser (view: source).

1. Are the keywords in the URL? 2. Are the keywords in the Title? 3. Are the keywords in the Meta-tags (Description) 4. Are the keywords formatted with H1 header tags in the page

If most of the sites are in fact optimizing for the keyword of choice, I’d recommend trying another keyword. If you get past this test, the next couple of things you should check are page rank for each of the top ten and back links to the page. You can see the PageRank by simply installing the Google Toolbar and enabling that feature. To see how many links are going to a site, you can enter this into a Google search: "link: http://www.site.com" (obviously without the quotes and replacing the www.site.com with the site in question). You should also know that if you try variations like link:http://www.site.com (no space) vs. link: http://www.site.com vs. link: www.site.com, you may see different results. Anyway, keep track of these numbers. Do the same thing for your own site.

WEBSITE PARITY – If your site is in the mix relative to Page Rank and back-links then it looks like you have a competitive chance and the stars are aligned for the keyword of choice. There doesn’t appear to be any obstacles preventing you from ranking on the first page of Google for that keyword. Here’s what you should do.

10 Tried & Tested Ways to get a Website working for you

1.Choose a good name relevant to your business and make sure you keep it short. We live in UK so we started with .co.uk sites but it is useful to have the .com version as well. Preferably make the same as a well searched key phrase relevant to you business. We subsequently found that that domains that were very long or used hyphens were not so good.

2. Brand your name and business by having your own name and address on the landing page. Have your telephone number on the website because sometimes people would like to have a chat with you before committing themselves.

IVR – What is it?

Copyright © 2009 Jon Harwokey

Interactive Voice Response (IVR) can make it possible for a computer to not only detect but respond to a human voice. This technology has originally only been used in the field of telecommunications. However, it is being used more and more for hands free driving in automobiles all over the world.

::Sometimes the most urgent thing you can poss...

Telecommunications is something we are all familiar with even if you don’t realize it. Have you ever called a business and heard a recorded announcement with options to either "say or push 1." After several of these type of prompts, we are usually placed on hold until a live person is available. This seems like a waste of time to most people and has resulted in hang ups and the loss of business. IVR platforms will allow the caller to get to the person they wish to talk to without all the annoying menus and buttons to push. A need for a receptionist to handle the incoming and outgoing phone calls will be a thing of the past. IVR applications can handle much larger call volumes than a traditional receptionist could. This will allow companies who utilize IVR systems to increase customer satisfaction and lower costs. Sounds like a win-win!
